Rocky Splash (2024)

August 27, 2024 R&D

Rocky Splash

This R&D focuses on creating custom force systems to control water motion in Houdini using FLIP fluid simulation.

The work is divided into two main sections.

The first section focuses on using custom forces as an initial driving force to create specific water behaviors, such as a hero wave, a particular splash shape, or a defined motion characteristic. In this case, the main example is a large-scale splash.

The second section focuses more on continuously guiding and directing the water throughout the simulation. This can be useful for effects such as flooding a city, controlling floodwater, or shaping the flow of a river.

Technically, this is more than simply assigning velocity. The system uses forces to continuously influence and steer the FLIP simulation over time, allowing the water to follow a desired direction or behavior while still preserving the underlying fluid dynamics.

The main goal was to build a more art-directable water simulation workflow, where large-scale motion can be controlled without completely losing the natural physical behavior of the fluid.
