Ballad of Renegade Nell
My work included FX shot-based and look development, and lighting, with a focus on building and integrating effects that could work consistently across both individual shots and the broader visual direction of the project.
The main FX work centered around grain simulation and pyro, but the overall scope covered a much wider range of effects, including dust, smoke, RBD destruction, magical effects, and particle systems.
A significant part of the work involved developing reusable FX setups while still allowing enough flexibility for shot-specific art direction. This meant balancing procedural workflows with manual control so that each effect could be adjusted to match composition, timing, scale, and the visual requirements of the sequence.
The goal was not only to create technically correct simulations, but also to make sure the final effects were visually coherent, art-directable, and production-ready.
This included refining the relationship between simulation, shading, lighting, and compositing needs, so the FX would integrate naturally into the final shots rather than feeling like isolated technical elements.
Overall, the work required a balance between simulation quality, consistency, and production efficiency, especially when the same type of effect needed to be reused or adapted across multiple shots.
