Destruction effects R&D
The main goal of this R&D was to build a fully destructible building system with a complete constraint network, custom collision setup, and interior structure.
The system was designed so that different buildings could use the same underlying destruction framework. Instead of rebuilding the simulation for every asset, the building geometry could be swapped while keeping the core setup stable.
The visual result could then be changed through parameters and art-directed controls, rather than by modifying the simulation network itself. This makes the workflow much easier to reuse and maintain across multiple shots.
This type of destruction is often used as a secondary effect. It may happen in the background, outside the main focal area, or during fast camera movement where the destruction is partially hidden by motion blur. Even so, the technical setup still needs to be robust enough to produce convincing, high-quality results from any camera angle.
This becomes especially important in large-scale sequences where several buildings may be destroyed at the same time, such as monster films, war sequences, or earthquake scenarios.
With this approach, a single procedural destruction graph can support many different buildings, which makes the workflow much more efficient for large productions.
A key requirement is that the assets follow a consistent modular modeling and preparation standard. If the buildings are authored with the expected structure, naming, hierarchy, and collision requirements, the same destruction system can be reused across a wide range of assets with only minimal shot-specific adjustments.
